It's Monday rehearsal night for the Hollywood Choir at the Cochran Avenue Baptist Church in mid-city L.A., but instead of a rousing gospel tune, the 65-member choir is dissecting the intervals and harmonies of a lilting arrangement of "Danny Boy." It is one of three songs (including a Gaelic version of the Emerald Isle's national anthem) they will be performing at Thursday's "This Is Ireland" concert at UCLA's Royce Hall.

"A gospel choir singing Irish songs does sound surprising," says the choir's buoyant leader Blinky Williams, laughing. "At first we didn't think an African American choir would have much in common with anything Irish, but once you learn more about their history and their music we realized there was a lot we could relate to."

For the show's creator, Irish born composer-conductor Eimear Noone, it's that spirit of connection with her adopted city of Los Angeles that inspired the creation of the concert that she hopes will become an annual St. Patrick's Day event for Los Angeles. With the demise of the annual downtown St Patrick's Day parade last year due to budget cuts, Noone wanted to find a new way to celebrate the Irish holiday.

"There is so much marketing around this time green decorations, shamrocks and beer but I wondered if anyone really knew what the day represented to the Irish," she says. "I wanted an experience that shows our story and our culture. I hope it might redefine what people know as St. Patrick's Day."

The evening will be a collection of all things Irish including history lessons and literary readings from the country's most celebrated poets, traditional Irish dances, a celebration of film and music incorporating classical repertoire, traditional folk songs and even the country's more famous rock exports like Thin Lizzy and U2. "We wanted to cover everything. We even have a section devoted to Irish insults," says Noone, who will co-present as well as conduct the evening's 40-piece orchestra.

High caliber Irish talent was eager to jump aboard. Lyric soprano Celine Byrne is flying in from Ireland, joining Boston-based opera baritone Sam McElroy and locally based Irish-born actors Roma Downey and Pierce Brosnan.

"I think it was a pincer movement on the resident Irish man," says Brosnan, laughing, on the phone from his Malibu home. "For me, it was a no-brainer to be a part of this evening. I don't think there has been anything like this done before."

For Brosnan, who has lived in Los Angeles since 1981, the day still holds nostalgic meaning. "St Patrick's Day has a certain romantic memory of Ireland," he says. "It's a celebration of being Irish and it's a wonderful day of unity for those of Irish descent worldwide."

Brosnan will be part of the evening's tribute to their world renowned national Abbey Theatre, which incubated many of Ireland's great playwrights and actors. He will be reciting W.B. Yeats' "Easter, 1916", a poem that recounts the historic events of the Easter Rising against the British.

"It's a great historic piece and weaves well into the tapestry of the evening," says Brosnan, who will read from a first edition copy signed by the poet. It also represents a return to the stage in some ways for the internationally known film star. "It's where I started and how I trained as an actor, but I haven't performed on stage for many years," he says. "To have a chance to do it in such a theatrical form with an orchestra and a piece of literature so poignant will be a great experience."

For Downey, the production is a chance for the Irish community to come together. "I'm excited that I can bring my kids and can expose them to our heritage," she says. The "Touched by an Angel" star will read from the works of the celebrated Nobel Prize-winning contemporary poet Seamus Heaney, who grew up in Downey's hometown of Derry in Northern Ireland.

"I think this night will not only appeal to anyone of Irish descent but I think it will be a chance for everyone to awaken their inner Celt," she says.

In "The Subject Was Roses," Nettie Cleary tells her 21-year-old son that she was hit in the eye by an apple core just before she was to start a new job. Because she developed a shiner, she was too embarrassed to show up. As a result, she had to get another job where she met Timmy's father and that's where her real problems began.

Stephanie Zimbalist nods slowly as she's reminded of the speech. Starting on Tuesday, she will portray Nettie in Frank D. Gilroy's 1965 Pulitzer Prize-winner at the George Street Playhouse in New Brunswick.

"We all have points in our lives where two roads present themselves and we have to make a decision very fast," she says, snapping her fingers quickly to underline the need for speed. "We don't know how it will impact our lives, but it usually does."

She lifts her hands and makes an expansive gesture. "It happened to me when I was applying to colleges," she says. "I'd settled on seven and had to write an essay for each. I was either going to be an art history or English major, so that meant Yale, Columbia, Connecticut and Sarah Lawrence. Or I was going to be an actress, which meant Juilliard, Stanford or Cal-Irvine. Well, one day I got out of a cab too fast and I left in it the essays for Yale, Columbia, Connecticut and Sarah Lawrence. So I became an actress."

Of course, some inspiration came from her father, actor Efrem Zimbalist Jr., and the stars with whom he worked. "As a little girl, I got to meet Audrey Hepburn, who took my face in her hands and suddenly make me want to be an actress," she says.

Hence, Stephanie Zimbalist's extensive experience in films ("The Awakening"), her noted TV series "Remington Steele" and stage appearances from Ogunquit, Maine, where she played the title role in "Sylvia," to multiple roles at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.

Zimbalist, 54, had never seen or read "The Subject Was Roses" when old friend Michael Mastro, who is directing, sent her the script.

"We've all done our fair share of therapy," she says matter-of-factly. "So now we know such terms as `family systems,' `co-dependent' and `enmeshment.' These issues are all over the play, but it takes place in 1946, when these terms didn't exist. People had to deal with these conditions without the labels. It's rather nice to be brought back to an era when such issues haven't been named. It allows us to see them more clearly for what they actually were."

Nettie Cleary does not have a happy marriage to John, but has always stayed in it partly because of Timmy. Zimbalist has not faced these problems.

"I couldn't have done everything I have if I'd had a child, so I have no regrets," she says. "Besides, I have four nieces and nephews and a great-niece and a great-nephew," she says, stressing the word "great" to capture both meanings of the word.

Then she reaches over to caress her long-haired dachshund. "And I have Scampi," she says. She's still traumatized from what happened to her previous dog. "Right in my front yard I saw him killed by a coyote," she says. "I was just about to play a dog on stage in `Sylvia' but called and said I couldn't do it. But then I felt my dog come to me and say, `Yes, you can.' And I did it."

So Zimbalist isn't particularly sorry that she lost those essays. Going to shoot "Remington Steele" in France, Ireland, Malta and points beyond ameliorated many disappointments.

"Pierce Brosnan," she says, referring to her co-star, "is a very sweet man. Oh, we had our issues, but a lot of it was hormones."

Irish filmmakers and pioneers have been at the forefront of Hollywood very literally since its inception. A new feature documentary, 'The Irish in Hollywood' will broadcast on Christmas day at 9:00pm on TV3 which will allow audiences the opportunity to examine the long legacy of Irish actors, producers and directors in Ireland. IFTN spoke with the doc's director Paul Howard about the documentary.

The fruit of over two years of extensive research and archive work, 'The Irish In Hollywood' is a historical documentary spanning more than 100 years of Irish talent in Hollywood's film history. Directed and produced by Paul Howard of Imagine Films, the feature traces the roots of Irish talent in Hollywood down through the ages and examines the historical and cultural impact that these men and women have had in tinsletown.

The documentary, narrated by Patrick Bergin, is based on the book 'Emeralds in Tinseltown', co-authored by the late Steve Brennan, veteran reporter and key editor for The Hollywood Reporter, and Bernadette O'Neill, and follows the story of the early pioneers such as Rex Ingram through to John Ford right up to key Irish personalities in contemporary cinema. Producer and director, Paul Howard is quick to praise Steve Brennan who passed away in the middle of 2009. "I got to know Steve very well, making this documentary," he says. I'm really sorry he didn't get to see it completed because he really would have loved it."

Paul explains that the 'The Irish in Hollywood' documentary came about as a result of several events: "Myself and a colleague of mine, writer Donal O' Neill, were working up a project tentatively titled 'Green Light' on the Irish in Hollywood,"he explains. "I was not even aware that the book, 'Emeralds in Tinseltown' was being written at the time. As it happened then, I was discussing our project with Morgan O' Sullivan who told me about a book being written on the same subject. After that I contacted Steve."

The feature examines the impact the Irish have had on the American movie industry through archival material and rare footage of the Irish luminaries such as Pat O'Brien, James Cagney, John Ford, Maureen O'Hara, and Barry Fitzgerald. The project also features engaging and insightful interviews with current industry leaders such as Gabriel Byrne, Fionnula Flanagan, Jim Sheridan, Anjelica Huston, John Boorman, Brendan Gleeson, Pierce Brosnan, Noel Pearson, John Moore, Saoirse Ronan and many others – something which proved very challenging, as Paul tells us: " All our interviewees agreed that they would all be very interested in taking part. But of course it was a question of timing. One of the major difficulties with this project was that, because all our interviewees are working in different parts of the world and because they are all doing so well, the huge logistical problem was getting them to commit to a particular time, and that was very, very difficult."

Paul was very much struck by the depth of knowledge many of his interviewees had as to the Irish heritage in Hollywood. One, in particular, surprised the filmmaker immensely: " One of the things about Gabriel – and it was one of the most amazing interviews that I have ever done – was that we sat down to interview him about his life and career in Hollywood, but he went way beyond that," he tells us. " Gabriel was very knowledgeable - knowledgeable to such a degree that he could form very credible opinions on our topics."

The documentary received support from the BAI's Sound and Vision fund and the Irish Film and Television Academy and will introduce audiences to several Irish characters such as an Irish immigrant employee of MGM Studios who designed the Oscar statuette, the Irishman who dreamed up the Hollywood sign, the Irish pioneer filmmakers who invented the Westerns and, of course, the Irish characters who were no strangers to scandal!

Having examined every Hollywood era possible Paul finds it impossible to select the Irish person who has left (or is in the process of leaving) the biggest mark on Hollywood. After much debate he settles on nine. "If you look at the different periods, I would say Rex Ingram to begin with,"he starts. "He was an artist and sculptor himself and he embraced the whole idea of movie making, and this new language which was so new at the time. Then you move onto John Ford who becomes the great master of film-making in that particular period, even though he mythologised both the American West and his view of Ireland through this exiled longing that he had. Following him you have Jim Sheridan and Neil Jordan who present a very, very different picture of Ireland, which breaks the stereotype created by John Ford and presents a very real picture through movies like 'In The Name of the Father', 'The Boxer', 'The Butcher Boy', 'Michael Collins' and so on."The remaining five include John Boorman ("Who I know was fundamentally English – but in many ways he took refuge in Ireland and made a home in Ireland") along with actors Gabriel Byrne, Liam Neeson, Ciarán Hynes and Pierce Brosnan.

That Paul can get no fewer than nine groundbreaking Irish filmmakers is very telling. Ireland has more than punched above its weight in Hollywood and has enjoyed a disproportionately large influence in the movie making industry. Paul thinks he can explain who: "We came from a long tradition of storytellinghe says. And, if you go back to the very early days in Hollywood, or even pre-Hollywood when you had a lot of Irish flooding into cities like New York and Boston and Philadelphia and so on, a lot of these were kind of maverick characters, and they were involved in theatre and vaudeville and so on. So when the movies came about they naturally gravitated with their storytelling tradition into the movies. And were immensely successful because story telling is in their blood."

On a final point I ask Paul what the ultimate message of 'The Irish in Hollywood' is. "Ultimately this is really about two countries who embraced one another and who embraced this new language," he replies thoughtfully. "This new poetry of the movie has, in the context of the modern age, become the defining art of our time. That's what this project is all about."

'The Irish in Hollywood' will air on Christmas Day at 9.00pm on TV3.

The film garnered loads of critical acclaim, renewing the age-old debate of supporting or boycotting an artist based on their personal conduct.

Roman Polanski's "The Ghost Writer" was the big winner at Saturday's European Film Awards, where it won awards for Best European Film, Best European Director and Best European Actor (Ewan McGregor), as well as receiving honors for its screenplay, music and production design.

Polanski's political thriller is considered a longshot in the Oscar race, but its six wins at the ceremony in Tallinn, Estonia far outpaced "Lebanon," which won two awards. No other film won more than one.

The show was hosted by German comedian Anke Engelke and Estonian actor Mart Avandi.

Polanski's Ghost Writer Scores Six at European Film Awards

The European Film Awards are not predictive of Oscars. But six wins for The Ghost Writer moves the film to the top of the screener pile. Maybe some folks will watch it now. One of my favorite films of last year, it shares with Shutter Island and The Town a formal elegance and control. These films are well-made across the board. But they are also genre films, accessible and fun—as opposed to high art. That is the question. This is no The Pianist. Summit is pushing the movie for awards consideration.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — They may be low-budget independent films, but the premieres at next month's Sundance Film Festival are loaded with stars, including Al Pacino, Katie Holmes, Pierce Brosnan, Jennifer Connelly, Kevin Spacey and Tobey Maguire.

Pacino, Holmes and Channing Tatum star in "The Son of No One," director Dito Montiel's post-9/11 New York drama that will be the closing-night film of Robert Redford's festival, which runs Jan. 20-30 in Park City, Utah.

The festival will mark the return of director Kevin Smith, whose career took off after his micro-budgeted debut film "Clerks" sold after playing Sundance in 1994. Smith will be looking for distribution for his latest Sundance premiere, "Red State," a horror tale set among Middle America fundamentalists that features John Goodman and Melissa Leo.

Among other premieres announced Thursday: George Ratliff's evangelical tale "Salvation Boulevard," with Brosnan and Connelly; JC Chandor's economic-crisis drama "Margin Call," starring Spacey; David Mackenzie's love story "Perfect Sense," with Ewan McGregor and Eva Green; Tom McCarthy's wrestling comedy "Win Win," with Paul Giamatti and Amy Ryan; Miguel Arteta's business-conference comedy "Cedar Rapids," with Ed Helms, John C. Reilly and Sigourney Weaver; and Jacob Aaron Estes' domestic romp "The Details," featuring Maguire and Elizabeth Banks.

Banks co-stars in a second Sundance premiere, Jesse Peretz's "My Idiot Brother," which also features Paul Rudd, Zooey Deschanel and Emily Mortimer in the tale of an ex-con pot peddler who moves in with his three sisters one after the other while trying to get his life in order.

"Salvation Boulevard" co-star Greg Kinnear stars in a second Sundance premiere, Jill Sprecher's "The Convincer," about an insurance salesman caught in a scheme involving a rare musical instrument. "The Convincer" also features Alan Arkin, who co-starred with Kinnear in the 2006 Sundance premiere "Little Miss Sunshine," which earned Arkin the supporting-actor Academy Award.

The Sundance lineup of about 125 films, which includes 64 dramatic and documentary features announced Wednesday that will compete for prizes, is tough to characterize this time, said festival director John Cooper.

"The diversity of story in this year's festival is very interesting. We've had years where it's one kind of dysfunctional family drama after another, or five different variations of coming-of-age stories," Cooper said. "But these films are very original. They're coming from very imaginative, creative places."

Festival organizers this year added a separate premieres category for documentaries, which will include "The Greatest Movie Ever Sold" from director Morgan Spurlock, who won Sundance's documentary directing prize for 2004's "Supersize Me." Spurlock's new film is billed as a "documentary about branding, advertising and product placement" that was "financed and made possible by branding, advertising and product placement."

Other documentary premieres include: Eugene Jarecki's "Reagan," a portrait of actor-turned-president Ronald Reagan; Liz Garbus' "Bobby Fischer Against the World," tracing the career of the chess-master; Jim Whitaker's "Rebirth," chronicling the past decade in the lives of five people deeply affected by the Sept. 11 attacks; Steve James' "The Interrupters," following the lives of ex-gang members now working to protect their communities from violence; and Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato's "Becoming Chaz," examining Chastity Bono's sex change.

Also announced Thursday was the festival's midnight slate of horror films and extreme comedies. The films include Madeleine Olnek's sci-fi romp "Codependent Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same"; Andre Ovredal's action fantasy "Troll Hunter'; Alex Stapleton's documentary "Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel," about indie filmmaker Roger Corman, who helped launch the career of Jack Nicholson, James Cameron, Francis Ford Coppola and many others; and Jason Eisener's vigilante tale "Hobo with a Shotgun," starring Rutger Hauer.

Sexy Hollywood stars like George Clooney and Pierce Brosnan are making middleaged men more attractive to younger women.

A survey by Debenhams found many women 30 years ago would have blanked men older than 45 at a party.

But thanks to hunky older stars, middle-aged men are no longer seen as overweight, badly-dressed bores.

Clooney, 49, and Brosnan, 57, are also role models for men who want to improve the way they look.

Debenhams spokeswoman Ruth Attridge said: "Older men are now remaining more attractive to women for longer than ever before.

"The simple fact is that older men no longer dress, look or act like granddads.

"They understand that continuing to look good after 50 means putting much more effort into dressing well."

Women marrying and having children later has also changed their views, the research found.

ROCKFORD (WREX/PRESS RELEASE) - A Rockford couple will appear in an upcoming movie about Dr. Jane Goodall, starring Angelina Jolie and Pierce Brosnan.

Gary Haun and Renee Reynolds will appear in the film, Jane's Journey, which is about Gary's good friend, Dr. Jane Goodall.

Jane Goodall is best known for her research of the chimpanzees in Africa. She travels over 300 days out of the year to lecture on animal preservation and conservation as well as other environmental issues. Dr. Goodall wrote the Introduction for Gary's first book, Vision From the Heart, which includes chapters detailing his climb to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and his dive with the Great White sharks in South Africa.

Gary met Jane several years ago and they became good friends. Dr. Goodall mentions her relationship with Gary during most of her lectures around the world. She also refers to Gary as one of her Reasons for Hope in the book of the same name.

In 1995, Gary brought Dr. Goodall to Rockford to speak at the Rockford Women's Center and Rockford College. At the time Gary gave "Dr. Jane" a stuffed animal for her birthday. She named the animal Mr. H and it has traveled with her on her many trips around the world. Mr. H has been touched by over three million people and many of the world's leaders.

As the Amazing Haundini, Gary has performed magic at the Jane Goodall Roots and Shoots summits. Roots and Shoots is a program of the Jane Goodall Institute that gets children involved with projects that help other people, animals and the planet.

Although blind for over thirty five years, Gary has performed magic throughout the world. In 2000, Gary appeared on the Rosie O'Donnell Show. It is interesting that Rosie appeared in the film A League of Their Own, which was about the Rockford Peaches. Gary gave Rosie a Rockford Peaches t-shirt that was signed by some of the original Peaches.

In April 2009 a film crew came to Rockford from Munich, Germany to film Gary's part in the film. His part was filmed at Rock Valley College with the assistance of Mike Webb, Director of Theatre at RVC. Angelina Jolie and Pierce Brosnan will also appear in the film. While Angelina's husband, Brad Pitt, does not appear in the film, Gary said he would like to thank Brad for all his charitable contributions that have helped so many people.

The film premiered in Germany in September and is getting rave reviews.

The film will make its North American premiere at the Hampton Film Festival. Gary and Renee will be guests of Dr. Jane Goodall's and Gary's other good friend, Lorenz Knauer of Munich, Germany who directed the film.

Gary and Renee are both graduates of Auburn High School and say that they are glad that Rockford is part of this full length theatrical documentary film. The film is also scheduled to appear on the Animal Planet Channel in the fall.

What do Pierce Brosnan, vanity plates and snipping pets where it counts have in common?

The new Spay and Neuter specialty plates feature original artwork by Pierce Brosnan.

The California Spay and Neuter Specialty License Plate Program, of course. These pet-focused plates feature original artwork created and donated by Mr. 007 himself, Pierce Brosnan. Brosnan's painting celebrates two of the animals he and his wife Keely have adopted: Shilo the dog and Angel Baby the cat.

The initiative was launched as an innovative way to help raise awareness and provide funding for free and low-cost spay and neuter surgeries through local animal care and control agency voucher programs and local veterinary clinics across California.

According to the latest statistics from the California Department of Public Health, the total number of dogs and cats euthanized in public shelters rose from 378,445 in 2004 to 432,512 in 2008. When the State's private shelters are included, it is estimated that more 500,000 pets are euthanized each year.

The increase in the number of homeless animals is attributed to several factors, including people abandoning their pets as a result of the mortgage and unemployment crisis, accidental litters from intact pets, over-breeding, and stray dogs and cats reproducing.

So far, the California Spay and Neuter Specialty License Plate Program has sold 1,500 plates, but it needs to reach 7,500 by June 2011 for the DMV to put the plates into production. Animal lovers can pre-order the special license plates here. | http://www.caspayplate.com/

The California Spay and Neuter License Plate Fund, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization will be responsible for managing the program. Net proceeds from the sale and annual renewal of these plates will help fund spay and neuter surgeries.

Rosamund revealed: "Although it's Bond spoof, it's nothing like being a Bond girl, because I've got a very interesting role to play actually. Not that the character in the Bond film wasn't interesting but, I don't get to play with guns of fight. There is a scene in a car, so there is an element of Bond about it. But she's quite a funny character."

The trajectory of a cute romantic comedy is like that of a bullet train rounding a corner: A little too much gas, and we're off the track with no hope of getting back on. "Playing the Game," which follows the separate-but-connected romantic misadventures of car salesman David Mitchell (Paul Campbell) and his grandfather (Andy Griffith as Joe), would seem to be begging for derailment - if not with its sometimes childish summarizations of dating logic, then certainly with grandpa's wacky return to the singles scene after decades of marriage and a few years of grieving. Occasionally, "Game" scrapes the edge of reason, and there really isn't a point where it just nails its subject matter or changes the genre in any meaningful way. The twist at the end, while clever, also takes that oversimplification of dating psychology entirely beyond the cusp of believability. But even with all that said, "Game" never completely succumbs to its shortcomings, and Griffith in particular avoids some early cutesy turbulence en route to a funny and thoughtful (if never necessarily fresh) look at retirement home dating.

It isn't enough to make "Game" the best or even 15th best romantic comedy you can see this year, but it's more than enough to push it past the pack of also-rans that initially look like its peers. Doris Roberts and Marla Sokoloff also star.

"There are too many of us who have lost someone to this brutal disease called cancer, and we are all sick and tired of cancer winning," he said in introducing breast cancer survivor Andrea Ivory, who runs a mobile mammography project in Miami that provides free screenings.The pair posed backstage for photos, Ivory glamorous in a gown with an oversized pink bow -- symbolic of the ribbons that mark the breast cancer battle.

In celebration of the 25th anniversary of California Coastal Cleanup Day, Sunset magazine and the California Coastal Commission will hold a gala in San Francisco honoring nine California "coastal heroes" on Thursday, according to the Commission.

Actor Pierce Brosnan and actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus will be among those honored at the event, which is taking place at the Aquarium of the Bay, according to event organizers.

The program will include presentations by the chair of the White House Council of Environmental Quality and the Administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The nine honorees are being recognized for the work they have done to protect the California coast, and the event will focus on stewardship, organizers said. It will preview the 25th annual California Coastal Cleanup Day, which is scheduled for the following Saturday.

More than 80,000 volunteers are expected to help remove debris from coastal areas throughout the state on Saturday, according to the California Coastal Commission.

The cleanup day is a global event that draws volunteers to coastal sites in 120 countries, organizers said. Last year, California had the largest cleanup in the world with about 75,000 volunteers at more than 750 sites.

London: Teen heartthrob Robert Pattinson has competition on the set of his new movie `Remember Me` from none other than former Bong star Pierce Brosnan, who plays his father in the movie.

The actor, who left his famous role of 007 to British actor Daniel Craig after his 2002 hit `Die Another Day`, looked his usual dashing self at the set of his new movie.

The 56-year-old actor was wearing his signature look, a well-cut suit and shirt and tie during the shooting of the movie in New York.

Brosnon has been cast as the father of `Twilight` hunk Robert Pattinson in the drama, which deals with a pair of star-crossed lovers who are brought together by family tragedy, Daily Mail reported.

Brosnan was last seen in musical comedy "Mamma Mia!".

Robert Pattinson and Pierce Brosnan are wrapping up filming on "Remember Me," in which the Irish actor plays the father of teenage idol Pattinson.

Friday was one of their last days on the set — but insiders are betting that it's not the last time the two will be linked.

IrishCentral sources say the two have talked at length about the "James Bond franchise," in which Brosnan was a key player.. Pattinson made clear during the Cannes film festival that he loves the role of the supercool 007. Brosnan who played Bond before Daniel Craig took over the role, made clear to the young superstar that he feels the Brit could be next in line to play the role.

The two have "bonded" on the film set, and Brosnan also had words of advice for Pattinson on how to handle the pitfalls of fame and celebrity. Just a few years back, Brosnan was the hottest thing in movies — the place where Pattinson is now. Extra scurity had to be ordered during the final week of the shoot because there were so many female fans seeking to catch a glimpse of Pattinson.

Next up for Brosnan -- who also has his own film production company — will be a self-financed film, while Pattinson will star in the sequel to "Twilight."

Both men expect to stay in touch however, according to sources.

Fans snub Bond in favor of Twilight star

Irish actor Pierce Brosnan usually attracts the crowds – and the ladies. But on the set of his new film "Remember Me," Brosnan is being snubbed by teeny boppers who prefer the younger, fresher "Twilight" actor Robert Pattinson.

The two Hollywood stars are on location in New York, where security has had to be drastically heightened in order to protect Pattinson from his crazed fans.

Brosnan, who plays Pattinson's father in the film, has said that diehard RPatz fans have been swarming the "Twilight" star since he's arrived. Many of them have tried to grab at the British actor, and even sent him running into a moving taxi cab as he flew across the street to escape the mob.

Ex-Bond star Brosnan may be shaken and stirred by all the commotion, but he doesn't seem to be bothered by the fact that he's not the most popular guy on set.

Brosnan fan Amy Feran snagged a spot outside the Plaza in New York to watch some of the "Remember Me" shoot.

While barricades were set up along the street to guard Pattinson from his teenage fans and their moms, who were all scrambling to take pictures of the sunglass-donning actor, Feran says "no one was interested in Pierce."

"They didn't pay any attention to Pierce when he was walking around the set," she said. "Even when he tripped on the curb, no one seemed to notice."

Meanwhile, Pattinson's security team escorted him everywhere, even from the short walk from the set to his trailer. Onlookers say that every time a car or truck would block the crowd's view of the actor's trailer, the girls would angrily scream until the driver got out of the way.

But Brosnan, as suave and gracious as ever, kept his cool amidst the hullabaloo, and even joked around with the mob of fans.

"Pierce turned around on the steps of the Plaza and took a picture of the crowd with his mobile, which got everybody laughing."

Columbia Pictures is remaking the 1990 thriller Total Recall, which starred Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Kurt Wimmer, who scripted the 1999 version of The Thomas Crown Affair starring Pierce Brosnan, has been hired to work on an updated Total Recall, according to trade paper The Hollywood Reporter.

Columbia Pictures has said the remake will be a "contemporized adaptation." It has not said who will be starring in the main role.

Wimmer also wrote Salt, a spy thriller starring Angelina Jolie that is currently in production.
Based on a Philip K Dick story, We Can Remember It For You Wholesale, the Schwarzenegger film follows a man who has a persistent dream about travelling to Mars and being with a woman he has never met.

The man's life begins to unravel after he decides to go to a company that sells virtual adventures by implanted false memories. Schwarzenegger's character decides to buy a trip to Mars in which he plays a spy.

The movie continually teases the audience as to what may be real or imagined.

The film, which also starred Sharon Stone and Rachel Ticotin, became a cult classic.

This Washington Times article is a little tacky. Is the reporter claiming Pierce is anything less
than enigmatic? Or that his visit to the West Wing is baffling?

His one word answer is to the point. There is no mystery. And if the reporter knew his stuff, he'd realize that in addition to being the former James Bond, Pierce is an environmentalist. He dedicated the Malibu Whale Watch to his former wife, Cassie. They shared a love of whales, a love also shared by Keely Shaye Smith, his wife and the mother of his two young sons.

Remington Steele may indeed be a man of mystery. Pierce, however, is a man of his word and dedicated to saving our planet.

There's an article circling the wires, written by Chicago Tribune writer Mark Cato. In it, he claims Pierce Brosnan is a lightweight Bond, largely because of his voice. Say waaa??? Who is this reporter kidding? Daniel Craig, charismatic? Brosnan a softee? This article borders on nonsensical fantasy. The best Bond since Sean Connery is and was Pierce Brosnan, who has the voice and the chops to prove it. Whatever happened to accuracy in journalism, not to mention research? Brosnan got his start in London experimental theatre. What voice-overs has Craig done, especially compared to Brosnan whose award-winning narratives have ranged from documentaries to animation and British folk-lore? Don't think too hard--just sit back and enjoy

Articles like this one fascinate me. Why is it hard to conceive (no pun intended) that a girl who wants to know her father would invite all of them to the wedding? Why is it hard to fathom that our heroine, Donna, not want to admit publicly that she wasn't sure who the father was? Since when are affairs of the heart logical? Just because DNA testing is possible doesn't mean broadcasting her dilemna to the world is an option for either of them.

Despite the fact that many who review the musicial Mamma Mia! take it way too seriously for their own britches, I find it hard to understand why they are so critical of the characters. Growing up during the time of "the flower power" just like Stellen's character, it's certainly not hard for me to comprehend Sam being a flower poweresque Bee-Gee-like character. Any one who watches the rock opera "HAIR" would see any combination of those two characters....long as you can grow it hair, bell bottomed paints and all the rest. The Sex Pistols got their start in the mid-70s -- at the height of Disco-mania. In a range of years that encompassed flower flower, disco and punk rock -- from late sixties, 1969 through the mid-70s, it's easy to see how Donna's amorous lads could have co-existed in one era and woo her on a Greek Isle.

Less easy to explain is Sky's promise to put Donna "on the line." But if she met her beaus in the 70s and Sophie, the daughter in question, is now 20, that does put things in the realm of a budding new internet.

But Mamma Mia! wasn't meant to be studied like rocket science. It was meant to be enjoyed. For middle aged women, like me, it's a chance to recapture youth, our mistakes and our triumphs. It's a time to laugh at those flared sequined outfits, wild hair and sky high shoes (what were we thinking?) It's a time to reflect on our suddenly emptying nests and what the future may hold.

My favorite part of this article, of course the comment about Pierce: "At his age and his star power, he can do what he wants and not have to worry."

How wonderful to see that in print. Pierce, take note!

The funniest, oh Pierce. Seems no article leaves his singing prowess uncommented on. Brasor writes: "Staying on pitch appears to be more painful than those bone-crunching stunts he performed as James Bond." Gotta add that one to my top ten list.

Broadway musicals were mainly collections of songs held together by comic themes before "Oklahoma!" opened in 1943. Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, who wrote the songs for "Oklahoma!" made them serve a story. This "book musical" concept has been the norm ever since.

"Mamma Mia!" is different. It has been called a "jukebox musical," meaning its story is built around pre-existing songs, which in this case were all made famous in the 1970s and '80s by the Swedish pop group ABBA. Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson wrote each ABBA song as a separate pop entity, so using them to support a unified plot is tricky.

However, the huge worldwide success of the stage production, which premiered in London in 1999, proves that the book doesn't really matter. ABBA retired in 1982, so at the time "Mamma Mia!" was as close to a live rendering of the group's music as their fans would get. Reportedly, people danced in the aisles.

That's less likely to happen with the movie version of "Mamma Mia!" It's more difficult to ignore the gaps in logic between the lyrics and the story, which is ridiculous in the first place. Meryl Streep is Donna, a middle-aged single mother who runs a dilapidated hotel on a sun-drenched Greek island. Her 20-year-old daughter, Sophie (Amanda Seyfried), is getting married. Unbeknownst to Donna, Sophie has found her old diary, which reveals the names of the three men who dated Donna that summer when Sophie was conceived. Sophie secretly invites all three men to the wedding in order to find out which one is her real father.

Most musical comedies feature storylines that are just as silly. What makes "Mamma Mia!" exceptionally silly is its disregard for narrative coherence. Each of the possible fathers seems to represent a different pop culture moment. The travel writer Bill (Stellan Skarsgard) tells Sophie that he met her mother during the time of "the flower power," while divorced architect Sam (Pierce Brosnan) shows her a photo from his youth in which he looks like a disco-era Bee Gee. London banker Harry (Colin Firth) says he followed the Sex Pistols when he romanced Donna. If any of these men is really Sophie's father, they would have to have been with her mother in 1988, by which point hippies and punks were as dated as bloomers.

It would be easy to say this movie is dated, too, but ABBA's songs have demonstrated an admirable resilience to the effects of time. Ulvaeus and Andersson had an enormous talent for melodic hooks that attach themselves to the human brain so tenaciously even people who look down on "Euro pop" confess an inability to resist tapping their feet whenever they hear an ABBA song.

The lyrics, however, are very resistible. In the pivotal scene where Sam reveals to Donna that he considered their summer romance more than just a fling, the show's writer, Catherine Johnson, has decided to use the song "SOS" to explicate his regret over losing her. "It used to be so nice," Sam sings about their love. "It used to be so good."

Brosnan gives these lines an earnest delivery that's obviously meant to compensate for their strange lack of urgency. The inadvertent comic effect is compounded by Brosnan's vocal shortcomings. Staying on pitch appears to be more painful than those bone-crunching stunts he performed as James Bond.

At his age and with his star power, Brosnan can do anything he wants and not have to worry about his reputation. The same goes double for Streep, who actually has stage musical experience and signed on for "Mamma Mia!" because she thought it would be fun. She seems to be having a ball, even though the choreography makes her look as if she were auditioning for Billy's Boot Camp. Of course, that is the primary appeal of the movie. Even ABBA fanatics don't claim that these songs are deep. As an artistic experience, "Mamma Mia!" is the equivalent of a night out at a karaoke bar. Just sit back and enjoy the cheese.

Still, it could have been better cheese. Christine Baranski, who plays Donna's over-the-hill but nevertheless oversexed pal Tanya, really turns up the heat during "Does Your Mother Know" and Streep's histrionic version of "The Winner Takes It All," sung on a windy promontory without the distraction of a production number, is exhilarating.

Otherwise, all the people involved seem to be having such a good time that they can't be bothered with matters like production values. It's a proudly amateurish enterprise, not so much a "jukebox musical" as an "air guitar musical."

Actor Pierce Brosnan has wished his fans a Merry Christmas on his official blog and has asked a special Holiday favor.

“In the spirit of giving this holiday season please consider making a small contribution to those in need,“ he wrote. “The following organizations were on our holiday gift giving list: the Jane Goodall Institute, Roots & Shoots, American Red Cross, Kauai Humane Society.

“These funds will be used to sponsor environmental education and youth based humanitarian programs, provide clean, safe drinking water to a developing nation by distributing thousands of portable water purifiers, offer relief services for the victims of the Southern California Wildfires, and care for numerous stray animals while also supporting the spay and neuter shelter program on the island of Kauai.“

Brosnan and his wife Keely Shaye are committed environmentalists, with interests that include clean air and water campaigns, marine mammal and wetland protection, and opposing environmentally disruptive projects such as the Cabrillo Port Liquefied Natural Gas facility being proposed off the coast of Malibu. In 1997 he was awarded the Environmental Leadership Award by Green Cross International. He is also a member of Oceana’s Ocean Council.

Beverly Garland, Laura's Mom, Dies at 82

A B-movie actress with spontaneous appearances in movies and on T.V., and a cult movie following from the 1950's, Beverly Garland died Friday in her Beverly Hills Home. According to the LA Times, Garland's died, at age 82, following a lengthy illness.

I saw her play Fred Mac Murray's second wife on "My Three Sons." She also played Bing Crosby's wife in the short-lived "Bing Crosby Show."

Garland may be best known by cult movie fans of "D.O.A," "Swamp Woman," and "Not of This Earth."

Most of her 1950s movies were before my time, but self described as a woman who wasn't apt to play the sweet, lovable woman on film or T.V., she captured interest in her 50 year career span of television and movie appearances.

It seems like those actresses who dare to be real and not pour on the syrupy sweetness, especially in those days had a way of sticking with you. At least they did with me.

Every time I remember her showing up she was gutsy, a little coarse around the edges, and to the point. Those roles seemed to suit her well in a variety of films. Of acting in B-movies Beverly Garland has said,

"You don't have to act in these pictures. All you have to do is possess a good pair of lungs. I can scream with more variations from shrill to vibrato than any other girl in pictures."

Garland could scream and stumble with the best of them. She admits they didn't try to over-act, but in retrospect also had the insight to see how far the movie industry had come.

Garland continued her career showing up as the mother of three high risk television characters. All of them were women. She played the mother of...

- Laura Holt, played by Stephanie Zimbalist, on "Remington Steele" in 1982.

- Amanda King, actress Kate Jackson, in "Scarecrow and Mrs. King," in 1983.

- Lois Lane, played by Teri Hatcher, in 1993 in "Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman."

You wouldn't expect anyone other than a Beverly Garland character to birth girls that turned out like those three challenging female television characters.

Beverly got her screen name from Richard Garland, to whom she was married for a couple of years. She was married to Fillmore Crank for over 30 years, until his death in 1999.

The musical breaks “Titanic“ record

“Mamma Mia!” has become the fastest selling DVD of all time in the UK, the BBC reports.

The musical sold 1,669,084 copies on its Monday release date, beating out the previous record holder, “Titanic,” by 560,000 copies.

“Mamma Mia!” earned more than £66 million (over $100 million) in theaters this past summer, making it the highest-grossing British film in UK box office history. It ousted former champion “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” and now holds the distinction of second highest-grossing film at the UK box office, after “Titanic.”

Universal managing director Ian Foster said the movie’s success was “a testament to the fun-loving spirit of the British public and the universal appeal of this wonderful film.”

“Mamma Mia!” is based on the ABBA Broadway musical and stars Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård and Amanda Seyfried.

Meryl Streep has revealed that she will sign up for a Mamma Mia! sequel if the male cast returns.

The actress told the Daily Mail: "Grand Mamma Mia! I like it! I'm up for doing a sequel, as long as you can get those fabulous boys - Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgard and Dominic Cooper - back!

"It's so gratifying that it has been this phenomenon around the world. It says there's an audience for something that appeals to a lot of women - something that might make them some money too!"

Abba's Benny Andersson recently admitted that no discussions have taken place about a sequel.

However, it is thought that the movie's record-breaking UK DVD and cinema release may prompt Universal to begin work on a follow-up.

Mamma Mia, That's a Rockin' Good Film

[July 18, 2008] It's me. Freshly returned from the Mamma Mia NYC premiere and the midnight showing of the film in Philadelphia. Only one word can describe both experiences…incredible.

First let me get this out of the way up front about the film: Yes, Pierce is gorgeous, sexy, and sings oh so slightly off-key, but to me that's what makes him so darned great in this movie. Let me also say this right away: It's true that for the last three years or more I've been lamenting the fear I'd never, ever again see PB with long hair. Well I want you to know I was very wrong in the most unexpected of ways.

More about that later. Let me also venture to say that with all those sexy, bared-chested guys hopping around the movie screen, Thank GAWD PB didn't follow the trend and wax!! And thank you, Meryl, for ripping off his shirt!!! But I digress. Back to the premiere.

I got there early, ready to shoot and took my place with the press corps. Here's the scoop from the heart of the premie:

Again PB was gorgeous. So was KSS. She really looked great. Reflecting on previous, unflattering photos of her, I really believe, poor thing, it must be that she just doesn't photograph well because she really looked stunning. In fact, every time I've seen her in person she’s been dead-on gorgeous. She looks perfectly, normally fit and healthy (yes, take that to mean not overweight). She wore a short, but tasteful black dress and a huge smile. Okay, enough about Keely…

PB was gracious as ever. He didn't seem sunburned and wasn't pale. He just looked great. He went over to greet his fans before walking the red -- sorry, blue carpet. He must be over his cold because he just seemed to be happy and to be having a great time.

PB was escorted down the carpet by a pretty blonde who I took to be the Universal publicist. She was thorough and efficient. Enough about her, too.

FLASHBACK: I remember when PB arrived at the GE premiere (omigod was that 13 years ago????). KSS popped out of the limo first. She did it again, only it was a Beamer this time. I don't think I'll ever figure out how and when photographers took the promotional photos of them standing in front of their 'environmentally friendly' car that's now all over the wires. It must have been quick because they were out of the car and over to the crowd in just about the time it took me to focus the camera. Then Pierce slowly made his way down the press corps line.

Colin Firth came next. There was a strong showing of CF fans there because they literally screamed for him to come for autographs. Of course there were screams for PB too. I just found the CF gals way too annoying…

Meryl was last. Actually, Amanda Seyfield may have been last because I didn't see her at all (or I should say recognize her because I know she was there). I really should back track here because before Pierce, Colin and everyone listed above i saw Benny from ABBA, Dominic whatever-his-name-is, (the groom), and Catherine Baranski. I didn't see Rita Wilson or Tom Hanks.

In the camera range of the broadcast reporters along the carpet, there was a slew of shirtless, hunky guys in swim trunks positioned around as "scenery." Music was playing in the background (honestly, after hearing it play over and over again for three hours I was sick of it, but I scarcely noticed it after the crowd heated up). The Mamma Mia! Movie card and a MM title card adorned the walkway.

I guess that's enough about the premie.

The movie is wonderful. Sadly, I think today's reviewers, having grown up with splashy special effects and dramatic, scintillating movie gore-fests, just don’t seem to know a good, clean film when they see one. In their minds, a film can't be good unless its dripping blood or oozing explosions. How sad.

For the record. I am not an ABBA fan. The only song I recognized in the entire film was "Dancing Queen," of course, and Waterloo -- which technically wasn’t even in the movie, unless you count the closing credits. Forget everything you read about boring cinematography and lackluster script. Everything about this movie is fantastic. It will keep you laughing, singing and even dancing in your seats.

My fav scene: Has to be Meryl singing "Winner takes it all" to PB before the wedding. He just looked so forlorn, so desperate and so darned handsome. She belted out that song like there was no tomorrow.

We've seen the SOS clip over and over and again and his singing here doesn’t start any better than the clip that's making the rounds. He really nailed the final song, though. I recognized his voice in the clip that Colin sang too, although he wasn't on camera for much of it (and I think the critics that have been so hard on hi s voice haven't really been listening too closely). Nobody ever claimed Pierce was in competition to sing like Pavorati.

PB was so very perfect for this part. To me, his slightly off-key singing is what makes his character seem so much more humanly sincere and appealing. It really was very sweet and sexy, in my book (and yes, I like Fozzie Bear too, as one reviewer describes his singing voice).

My second fav scene is the entire Dancing Queen sequence. I wanted to get out of my chair, kick off my shoes and form a dance line around the theater. Yes, I’m a dancer at heart, it’s true.

Okay, I know PB isn't featured prominently in either one of those scenes. So…

My fav PB scene. I really love part where he finally confronts Donna about their relationship. Why, oh why do we so often let ourselves get in the way of true love??? (okay, personal editorial comment, but oh so very true for me at least).

A couple of closing thoughts: Why does he seem so nervous? My only thought about this role other than he was great, obviously game and gorgeous in it is that to me he also seemed a tad apprehensive as he moves through it. Okay, I understand him being worried about his singing. After all the press, sorry, I mean the MALE press of late have been pretty harsh on him about a lot of things. Given that it's easy to understand why he would be a little nervous. But Pierce such a versatile actor that he should just let it roll and forget their envious nonsense. I guess you could say that if men are getting jealous over the way women respond to his performances, he’s been successful in his role as sexy male lead.

Honestly. And men say women can be catty. Hah! I've seen more cattiness demonstrated by male reporters in response to Pierce's adeptness at exuding both virility and masculinity in two sentences flat, to know jealously is alive and well and living amid both genders, thank you. I think we need more female film reviewers. Where the heck are they????

I also think he really needs to surround himself with people he can trust. I'm sure he gets that type of genuine support from his family. But outside of the folks at IDT, I sometimes wonder if he always gets it from those big studio Hollywood types out there. Okay maybe I'm biased and a little cynical because I think EON treated him grossly unfair. But Universal obviously pulled out all the stops to effectively counter the unjustly negative singing publicity so maybe I'm wrong about that too.

Anyway, my pix aren't that great. I'm not vicious papparrazi and without a microphone backing me up I'm out of my element. And truth be told, as always PB never takes a bad shot, unless I happen to be holding the camera. Oh, well. Such is life.

One final word. DO, DO DO go see the movie. See it this weekend. We must push up the box office and meet the challenge against the Dark Knight. All the guys will want to see Batman and take their dates with them. Maybe girl power will be a formidable force and I'm hoping the MM numbers will be through the roof…

Watch PB on Regis on opening day, then go out get your movie tix ;-). Oh, I almost forgot. About that hair. Nah, you'll just have to see the film to understand ;-)

And oh, before I forget -- here's the truly final word: Thank goodness for blue spandex, ooh baby, baby...

Where's Jenny (Craig) when you need her?

Fresh after this article on “full-figured fashion” appeared in December Vogue (http://toofatforfashion.blogspot.com/2006/12/woman-in-full-keely-shaye-smith.html), PBs personal Bond babe, Keely Shaye Smith, donned a two-toned bikini and took to the beach.

Now the blogsphere is on fire after recent photos of PB and KSS swimming in Hawaii have surfaced. One of the latest is below. The subject? Size matters. Bikini size, that is.

Obviously KSS weighs in at a great deal more than your traditional Hollywood trophy wife. And now the tabs are having a field day. In fact, KSSs ample girth has caused the biggest online stir since Jennifer Love Hewitt was called fat for swimming in her size six bikini. A fat size six? Gimme a break.

Well a size six Keely ain’t. But so what?

Even though tab articles also mention that Pierce seems to have gained weight, most still portray him as Bond-sexy. He is absolutely not emaciated, however as this particular article suggests.

While I agree that some of the tabloid comments about KSS are awfully catty, it seems to me than anyone who puts on a bikini and hops in the surf had better be somewhat in shape or they are inviting trouble.

Don’t get me wrong. I have no problem with her being overweight. But when you're a woman cavorting with James Bond on the beach in a bikini, you have to know at some level you'll be compared to Ursula Andress or Halle Berry.

Personally, I’m less concerned about her weight gain than I am about was she does with it in her status as a “celebrity.”

What is really tragic in all of this is KSS is uniquely positioned to be a role model for full-figured women everywhere. The fact that she's on the heavy side and married to arguably the sexiest, most gorgeous guy on earth means she could really be a solid voice for women who struggle with weight issues. Even the Vogue article I posted earlier could help with this *IF* the authors were honest and included photos of her at her current weight in the article, instead of selecting photos taken when she was obviously more svelte and still in shape to promote in the feature.

KSS is quick to exploit celebrity and position Pierce as a vanguard for animal rights and environmental issues. She needs to equally step up to the plate join the fray on the subject of weight by encouraging the press to embrace a healthy women's body image, particularly when it comes the current trend that maintains you have to be size 0 to be sexy.

BOND actor Pierce Brosnan has daggers out for gossip columnists who have been criticising his wife about her weight.The ex-007 star has hit the roof over catty commentators' remarks likening his wife Keely Shaye Smith to portly villain Goldfinger.

Celebrity websites have been using Bond puns to disparage the actor's wife's figure after pictures emerged of the couple on the beach in Hawaii.TMZ.com posted photos of the couple under the headline "Double Oh No!"Another asked if she had eaten "too many late night pizzas".

While celebritystyle.com remarked: "Not sure when Pierce signed up for marriage he expected to get a wife whose body looks more like Goldfinger's."

Even hunky Pierce has put on a few pounds but next to his wife looks somewhat emaciated.

We certainly hope that Diamonds are forever -- but it wouldn't hurt if she could shed a few kilos."The pictures at the core of these comments were taken of Pierce (54) and Keely (44) relaxing on holiday in Hawaii.

The mum of two has put on at least 70lbs since their wedding in 2001 and now tips the scales at 15 stone.

A pal said, "Keely has tried everything to lose weight, including the Atkins diet and the South Beach Diet and working out."

"Pierce thinks comments about her weight are plain nasty."

Pictures of the mother of two coming out of the sea in a bikini like Ursula Andress in Dr No sparked the remarks.

The couple, married seven years ago, have two children Dylan Thomas and Paris Beckett. Keely is Pierce's second wife.

His first wife Cassandra Harris died of ovarian cancer in 1991. The couple had been together for 10 years and had one son Sean.

The Bond star goes to Hawaii to relax. However, he is in a battle with one of his neighbours after a 77-year-old Hawaiian pensioner claimed that he is stealing her water by diverting it from her farm.

A lawyer for the 007 star said, "The water goes through five different properties and it's not Pierce's problem."

Does anyone have an update on what's happening with Pierce Brosnan's new film for Universal, Momma Mia, which has begun shooting in Greece? Where are pictures and updates from the set?

Here's a publicity still released by Universal that is one of my favorite pictures coming off the set. Most people know by now that Pierce stars alongside Meryl Streep and Colin Firth in the big screen adaptation of this hit musical. He'll play Sam, a man who is summoned to a Greek isle by a woman who believes he might be her father.

The lack of real publicity on Pierce's two most recent films -- Seraphim Falls and Shattered/Butterfly on a Wheel -- makes me even more curious about what's happening with Momma Mia's filming in Greece.

I keep checking his website, 'piercebrosnan.com' for regualr updates and/or blog posts from Pierce updating fans on what's happening. So far, there's only an update from September 1: http://www.piercebrosnan.com/menu.php?mm=1&sm=1&pn=1. So I'm turning to you, his dedicated fans out there in Greece (or other parts of the world) to fill the rest of us in on the goings on. Share your pictures and stories. We're dying to know!!!

Personally I can't wait for this film to come out. It promises to be a biggie. Tom Hanks is one of the producers. His wife, Rita Wilson, is executive producer. Earlier this summer, co-producer Judy Craymer told Michael Fleming at Variety that: "Pierce brings a certain smooch factor, and we think he'll have great chemistry with Meryl in a romantic comedy."

"He is just the perfect choice," Craymer said.

I agree.

I can't wait to see more 'smoochable' pix like the one above and anxiously await any updates from people who have seen the filming first hand!

Back the Birds, Not Bond

Is it a propos that my first blog post is about Bond? November, 2006 found me doing a happy dance when the Happy Feet penguins gave the new Bond the bird here in the U.S., (no pun intended), with Mumble beating Daniel Craig to a pulp at the box office. That’s hard to fathom, since in various Bond circles I’m known as “Miss Moneypenny,” Bond fan extraordinaire.

You should know I’ve been a Bond fan since Sean Connery first spotted Ursula Andress coming out of the surf. In addition to the divine Miss Moneypenny, I love the one-liners, the gadgets and most of all Q. My Bond is tall, DARK-haired and HANDSOME. I don’t like my Bond “gritty,” whatever that means, he doesn’t have a “craggy face,” nor do I think he needs to morph into Jason Bourne, no matter what the critics say.

It is true I’ll always be a Pierce Brosnan fan. Unfortunately, I also used to be a Bond fan. When I went to the GoldenEye world premiere in ‘95 and Die Another Day in 2002, I had no clue they would literally be my first and last.

Even beyond the fact that Pierce is no longer in the role, the Bond I knew and loved, the character who came to life in pages written by Ian Fleming, and again on the silver screen is gone. Let me be clear: I liked the campy villains — Odd Job with this steel-rimmed bowler, Blofeld and his white cat; the metal-mouthed Jaws; Xenia's deadly thighs. I liked the gadgets, the car phone that was light-years ahead of its time, the jet back-pack and yes, even the invisible car. And I liked each and every Bond, including George Lazenby...until now.

I resent critics telling me the time and money I’ve spent watching and collecting the series over 40 years means nothing. For all the reviewers who claim I should have stopped watching Bond after Dr. No and suggest I have no taste because wasn’t appalled by Moore and Dalton’s portrayals, I say “who are you to tell me what I should want from a Bond movie?”

What’s wrong with this new Bond? Other than the fact that his name isn’t Pierce Brosnan, I find the PR hype surrounding Daniel Craig and the film, Casino Royale that came from Danjaq/EON last fall to be pretty acrimonious (and inaccurate). Those of us who have been Bond fans from the onset virtually seem to be told by EON to “take this Bond or shove it.” How ungrateful.

Well I’m shoved back, launching a viral Back the Birds not Bond campaign. Apparently many believed as I did — that over the weekend of November 17, if you want to see the cutest thing in a tux, back the Birds, not Bond.

Yes, it's true. Mumble is the word. The U.S. box as reflected below tells the story. Bird backers made their voices heard.

Don’t get me wrong. I wasn’t one of the online Daniel Craig bashers. But the anti-Pierce viciousness that surfaced through EONs PR counter-campaign left me sad and appalled. I had enough.

JUST THE FACTS, M’AM
EON smear campaign aside, according to Boxoffice mojo, the November, 2006 Bond opening weekend was the least attended pre-Thanksgiving frame in eight years. It lagged 19 percent behind 2005, when Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire debuted to a $102.7 million take.

Brandon Gray in his article “Penguins Tip-Tap Past Bond,” writes: “Casino Royale sold roughly as many tickets as Brosnan’s first, GoldenEye, did at 2,667 theaters on the same weekend in 1995. GoldenEye, though, had more of an uphill battle, coming six years after the franchise fizzled with License to Kill.

And how. When you think about it Pierce’s previous Bond films went up against heavy hitters…Tomorrow Never Dies went toe-to-toe with the film behemoth, Titanic. Die Another Day opened one week after Harry Potter, Chamber of Secrets and continued to hold its own at the box office after Analyze That opened two weeks later.

In fact, at 47 million, Die Another Day still has the 10th largest November box office opening, followed by Happy Feet with 41 million. Casino Royale isn’t even in the top ten. So much for a franchise that needed a reboot.

Goldfinger, Blofeld, Dr. No and Jaws—a bunch of pansies compared to Mumble. Yes, after four decades of ridding the world of megalomaniacs and their henchmen, James Bond finally met his match in a tap-happy penguin.

In a tight race for the weekend box-office crown, Happy Feet danced in with $41.5 million to outgun Casino Royale. The first outing for new spy guy Daniel Craig finished with $40.8 million, per final studio figures Monday.

"It was always going to be a close one to call," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of the ticket-tallying Exhibitor Relations. "Both films, though very different, had very strong audience awareness and interest,…both were very well reviewed,...both studios did everything right with the marketing and both were great projects."

Dergarabedian says the two movies were in a close battle all weekend. The 007 film got off to a fast start and had the edge on Friday, but with families flocking to multiplexes over the weekend, Mumble won by a beak.

Warner Bros.' PG-rated Happy Feet features the voice of Elijah Wood as Mumble, a woolly little Emperor penguin who can't sing like the rest of his pals in the colony but discovers he can make like Fred Astaire (or Emmitt Smith) on the dancefloor. Directed by George Miller (of Babe fame), the CGI 'toon iced an $10,918 per screen average at 3,804 locations.

Casino Royale, officially the 21st movie in the franchise, turned to Ian Fleming's first 007 novel and a new leading man to reinvigorate the series. The PG-13 Sony release, in which we learn how Bond earned his license to kill, registered a slightly higher average ($11,891) at slightly fewer sites (3,413). Directed by Martin Campbell, the film features Eva Green as the chief beauty and Mads Mikkelsen as the chief baddie and returns Judi Dench as Bond boss M.

The new Bond finish behind the last installment, the Pierce Brosnan-powered Die Another Day, which opened in November 2002 with a franchise record $47 million on its way to $106.9 million domestically.

Both Happy Feet and Casino Royale are expected to hold up through the Thanksgiving weekend.

Meanwhile, Borat continued to make big success in America. The mockumentary slipped to third place, dropping just 48 percent from last weekend's top slot to pocket $14.6 million. The film has totaled $90.5 million and is on track to surpass the $100 million mark in the next few days, because, as a studio rep says, "Everyone wants to see what the hoopla is about."

Also in its third week The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause dropped 51 percent from second to fourth place with $8.3 million, bringing the G-rated Disney sequel gross to $51.7 million.

Flushed Away, another film in its third go-round, continued to underachieve for DreamWorks and Paramount. The British-produced rodent 'toon fell 60 percent from third to sixth place with $6.6 million over the weekend. Its total stands at $48.6 million; last week, DreamWorks Animation stock took a hit when the studio announced it was going to lose major money on the film.

Freestyle Releasing earned a collective $2.3 million from 8 Films to Die For–Horrorfest, enough to rank 10th for the weekend (with a $4,735 average at 488 sites), just ahead of Bob Odenkirk's deadpan lock-up comedy Let's Go to Prison. The latter, an R-rated Universal release starring Dax Shepard, Will Arnett and Dylan Baker, locked up $2.1 million, incarcerating a mere $1,410 per screen at 1,495 sites.

New in limited release, Bobby was the clear winner, averaging $34,520 at two sites for a total of $69,039. Directed by Emilio Estevez, the R-rated MGM release explores the day of Robert F. Kennedy's assassination at Los Angeles' Ambassador Hotel from several fictional characters, played by an all-star cast that includes Elijah Wood, Laurence Fishburne, Lindsay Lohan, Anthony Hopkins, Ashton Kutcher, Demi Moore, Sharon Stone, Heather Graham, William H. Macy and Estevez's dad, Martin Sheen.

Doing only slim business was Fast Food Nation, Richard Linklater's adaptation of Eric Schlosser's exposé of chain restaurants and their suppliers. The R-rated Fox Searchlight release, with a cast that includes Greg Kinnear, Wilmer Valderrama and Bobby Cannavale and cameos from the likes of Bruce Willis, didn't make much of a happy meal for its distributor, munching up only $1,280 per screen at 321 locations for a value menu-worthy $372,012.

Despite the good news for Mumble and 007, the overall gross was down 20 percent from last weekend and 22 percent down over this time last year, when Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire conjured up a whopping $102.3 million.
